Pre-Marathon Paranoia

aaaah!!

Yes, I have it bad!! First of all.. running is my stress relief (so is drinking – a ‘lil bit), and I’m not doing either of these. (We’ll forget about the 3 vodka iced-teas at the pool yesterday, I nixed them out with the amount of water I drank ;) ) Anyway, I am going crazy over here. The last two weeks have been weird. I miss running like I miss love – you know you need it and want it and if it’s not there, it’s not there and there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s out of your control. But when you find it again… it will be amazing! New, fun, and on a whole nother level. The stomach flip.

But now the paranoia is setting in… what if I trip down the stairs and break my ankle this week? What if I step on a piece of glass in La Costa? What if my mom shuts my arm in the car window? What if I get sick… or worse, (insert dramatic music here) that time of the month! Which looks like it will be. Then there’s more worries… what if something goes wrong that day or what if I forget something? Or why has my leg been feeling a little weird, or my ankle hurting when I haven’t even been running!? Yes… paranoia.

I hate traveling to begin with and I always stress out about forgetting things. Worrying about what to pack and if I remembered everything. And then there’s the getting to the airport on time, going through security, ugh. Traveling plus marathon = stress.

Deep breath!!! This is where a glass of wine would help. It is only natural though. Everything will work out as planned, it always never does but that’s when you adapt and change plans and work it out. Just make sure you pack your running shoes in your carryon.

Memorial Day

so cute

No, it doesn’t mean a day off work, or drinking too much at a family BBQ and embarrassing yourself in front of Aunt Sally. It doesn’t even mean throwing all your inhibitions out the window on the AC Expressway, heading to the shore and knowing you will be coming back with regrets. And no it’s not about the beach or the mountains or your tan. It’s about remembering those who have died in our Nation’s Service. People forget and take for granted other people’s live and things that go on around them. We all do it. But days like today we need to take a step back, not be so selfish and think about what other people and humanity really means. And that there are our fellow man dying for us, fight for us, helping us in ways we would never even know.

Before Harvey got sick we did go about our daily lives, not paying attention to much else but what was important in our future. I’d like to think we were both very caring and compassionate people, giving to charities and helping out others. But after dealing with Cancer, your whole world is opened up. You look around you in the hospital and you see other people just like you… giving up their whole lives and everything they’ve dreamed and worked hard for, from no fault of their own. Fighting through one of the worst battles you could possibly fight and not knowing if you are gonig to come out on top. BUT Harvey never forgot about others during his fight… he put everyone else before himself and he fought with the most positive attitude. He changed lives. Whether other people know it or not… he gave a lot of people a lot of things. The meaning of true happiness and an example of how to live your life and to die with honor. Nothing should ever be taken for granted, especially your fellow man.

People can go about their daily lives and forget about others and be selfish, and that’s fine… it’s going to happen. But seeing what is there and knowing what we can and do, do for each other is amazing and eye opening. So the next time you walk down the street and you see a child in a wheelchair or a Veteren, or someone with cancer, take a step back and look at your life and what you really have and appreciate what these people are giving you, and how lucky you are. And think about one way you can give back. Whether it’s helping an old woman cross the street, smiling at somone who looks like they are having a bad day… giving blood, donating to cancer research. Or just doing something completely unselfish. And then REMEMBER – remember those others, and the ones we have lost.

On a lighter note… you know I wasn’t about to have an over indulgent weekend with out a little retail’n it up. Not my fault though, my flip flop broke right outside the Wild Ocean Surf Shop . So I really did NEED to buy new ones. Along with a comfy sweatshirt of course. Let’s hear it for the Red White and BLUE.

Feed the Monster

sistas

Theme for the weekend? – Maybe. Hilarious? – Definitely! LOVE my sisters and extended family. It was bitter sweet to see everyone this weekend, as expected. Laughing, crying, drinking, eating, talking, missing Harvey. But most importantly, healing and being together. I had a little bit of a hard time driving down to Wildwood on yesterday. For once it was not due to traffic! Panicking, dealing with it and getting through it, only makes it easier the next time and hopefully makes less and less times. Once I arrived, everything was much better and I forgot how much I missed everyone!

view

I must say Harv’s (my) Fam knows how to party and have a good time! So how does one who is “not drinking” and “eating healthy” stay good. Yes, I put that in quotes because I have obviously been taking it lightly lately. Although, I am much better then I used to be ;) . It can be a struggle sometimes to hold back and have self control in a lot of ways. Drinking, eating, tanning, shopping!? Why do these things become obsessions? Especially with woman. Ok, probably only with women. Not sure I know of any dudes who have these problems. So you tell yourself… I’ll have ONE drink… or ONE piece cake, but once you crack and go over your limit, it’s too late. Then it becomes the fact that you already blew it, so you might as well start fresh the next day, or the next Monday. Anyone else agree??

big girl bottle

Along goes the weekend and after running some errands and getting none other then food and alchy we all got to hang out on the balcony in the gorgeous weather! Definitely a great night with everyone… topped off with Birthday cake and champagne toast. All of which were a little over indulged ;) PS – there is no picture of the cake because Renee and I pretty much devoured it in 2.5 seconds. This is were we learn about Feeding the Monster.

looooong walk

Another great day today weather and other wise – minus the sugar downers and hangovers. Perfect beach day! And it must have been if I actually went into the water. Wildwood is great because the beach is huge and even on Memorial Day Weekend you are not sitting right on top of other people (unless you want to be), AND you get a great workout in walking the the water. So finally the weekend ended with a trip to visit some more friends and a stop at La CostaOne one of many places I never thought I would be completely sober. That’s right, only water for this little girl today! And that is the truth.

Moral of the story… you gotta feed your inner monster sometimes. Just start fresh on Monday. :)

Crimson Love

beeeeeansfresh

New Fav hair salon! So Friday I mentioned I tried a new hair place with a Groupon that I got. First of all… I love trying new places/things whether it’s restaurants, products, food, wine, whatev!! I decided to start off the morning with a lil fresh ground coffee… can’t go wrong there, right? Maybe this was the key to my good day! Although probably more so my attitude than anything. Helmet time. So I got down to Rittenhouse quit early considering the timing with traffic. I got to walk around a bit (super nice day), and I took down some numbers for apartments. I’m not sure Rittenhouse is the place for me to move – it seems a little stuffy for my taste. Like – I feel like I should have been more dressed up for walking along the street. Leggings and a cute top, flip flops, no? Anyway, that is to all be worked out soon.

Crimson Hair Studio I knew I fell in love right away when my Kate Spade ”poppy” handbag matched their chairs exactly! I was greated right away by Ashley with a genuine smile and “great to see me attitude!” Love It! Some hair places and salons can be a little snooty and standoffish. The owner, Jen came over to say hi to be as well. Everyone had cute “crimson” outfits on, unlike your typical black and was super friendly and accommodating. Sometimes at salons you get that forced feeling where you know everyone is trying to make small talk because it’s their job. Not here, I felt like I knew all these Ladies and fit right in! No product forcement either. Bumble and Bumble stuff is great but I didn’t feel any pressure to buy anything. Got a free sample though! The retro vibe of Crimson, friendly atmosphere and great customer service will definitely have me going back here, not to mention their very reasonable prices… especially for Rittenhouse. I got an amazing cut with Brooke, and a conditioning treatment – much needed!

Poooooool time!! My new fav thing to do like everyday. Damian and I decided that this is the best thing since sliced bread or the wheel.

laughing it up

Not sure which. I think he mentioned the wheel since he’s not really into eating many carbs. :) Anyway, tons of cool new people to meet at this place, with already have a few news friends to hang with. Great drinks (anytime I can drink wine outside at 2 in the afternoon without having to order a meal, I am down with that), also excellent service!! I grabbed a towel to put down on my lounge chair and then went into the locker room to change and when I got back there was a fresh glass of ice water complete with lemon sitting on my table when I got back. Score! Full review on Arrow Swim Club will be a must up and coming!

Life is Hard, Get a Helmet

crazy ralph

Get a F*cking Helmet is the true saying. Or, how my Dad says it anyway. He is one tough cookie… and definitely doesn’t have sympathy for whiners, or people who complain about not getting what they want in life if they don’t try hard enough. Again – nothing is going to be handed to you on a silver platter. So enough about that. This saying always rings in my head sometimes because it’s so true! Yesterday I thought about it all day, because I had an annoying day. The morning started off bad. When I was on my way to go run a lousy 3-miler. Ok – right there… bad attitude! Anyway… I’d like to say I had a “little car incident”, we won’t talk about the details but I ended up being at the insurance company and rental car place all day. My poor Mom was here cleaning up Murph’s poop and complete destruction of the backyard. I honestly had plans to help her, I swear! :)

love salads

So after having a yummy lunch with Mom and saying bye to Murphster - since the rents are putting up withwatching him this weekend, my Mom closed my arm in the automatic car window, ouch!! It didn’t hurt that bad but I started to cry. You can only take so much in one day you know? Ok… so I was being a baby but my circumstances allow for that from time to time. Ralph would not approve. Although he would approve of a little alchohol therapy. Red wine plus cherries, plus some edamame on the side (I know, I’m weird), try it, it’s a great snack though! Looks like the day… not so bad after all.

late night snack

"be good murph"

Anyway, moral of the story/day is I said I’m going to put my helmet on and have an “amaz-balls day tomorrow!” And I am!! So far great day and it’s not even noon yet! Got my hair cut and conditioned in the morning at Crimson Hair Studio (recap on this later). Great deal through Groupon - which is by far one of my fav inventions ever. Although another sneaky marketing ploy. Walked around Rittenhouse before my appointment and did some apartment/house hunting and some errands done, woo-hoo finally some things crossed off my “never ending story” list. Love that movie, by the way. And now it’s Poooooooool time!! More to come on this later, trust me! ;) I will have a weekend recap when I get back from The Wood (for those of you not in Philly area, this is Wildwood, NJ). Fun times to come, lots to talk about next week! :) LOVE <3

Six Taper-tots

Did I mention I don’t like this non-running thing… or this non-drinking thing. Although I guess 6 miles and drinking wine really doesn’t count as “none”. But it is “not a lot”, which is unusual for yours truly. But I ended up having a great run yesterday. Valley Forge is becoming my new favorite running place. Some of the things I like are that it is really nice and peaceful, you feel like you are out in the middle of no-where (pretty much because you are) – sorry, I am a city girl! There is barely anyone there during the week, so no one to trip you up or manuever around. No bikers to almost run you over and tell you that you need to get out of the way. Apparently they own the path even though John B. Kelly was a rower and NOT a biker, thank you. Anyway, some of the VF path is wooded, and you also get your hill work in at the same time. Number one reason, awesome bathrooms with actual sinks!

sink!

As opposed to porta-potties on KD, which I would never even dare taking a picture of because it would be deemed as “inappropriate”, or “adult content”. Some of the things that I don’t like are the power plant in the background (always creeps me out), I think the fields are crawling with ticks – which they probably are. And this scary sign that I found the other day… they are all over the place. Just in case you can’t read I didn’t take a good picture it reads “Asbestos Cancer and Lung Disease Hazard, Authorized Personnel Only, Respirators and Protective Clothing are Required in this Area”. WTF? Actually I figured out later that apparently it’s only if you are digging in the area. Still… I’m sure it’s awesome for the environment. Anyway… I tried to stay at a slow pace… I think I averaged around 9 min miles, which I should have slowed down a little bit more, especially with the hills. I will be careful from here on out though with my taper. Did I mention how I hate tapering? Yeah, I think we got that down by now. I stopped a few times to take some pictures though (finally!), and took it easy, no pressure.. and I really did enjoy it.

Good Grief

car ride

Greiving… what is it really? And can anyone actually explain it. If I’ve learned anything in Development Psych this week it is that there are tons and tons of studies but no actual facts and scientific laws about human behaviors. Everyone is different when it comes to the greiving process, yet there are a lot of similarities that people go through. I have definitely been having a rough road lately and I think a lot of it has to do with the timing (approaching 6 months, is a huge mile marker), and also the change in seasons. Moving forward isn’t always the easiest thing. One second you can be so happy and enjoying life and going about your daily business. Then everything hits you like a wave. Knocking you over and you don’t know what to do. Other times you wake up knowing the day is going to be a hard one to get through. But they all get easier. If I got this far, I can get ahead even farther then I ever thought I could possibly go.

walking himself

I am definitely learning a LOT from all of this… about life, and myself, and once I am completely healed I will have the true gift of life and have become a stronger person, and the person that I was meant to be. Life needs to be lived and not planned because plans don’t always work out and there are always things that get in your way.

So what to do on a bad day. Today was a Murph walk day… which can be nice and relaxing or also super stressful. As I have mentioned probably a million and one times already M-dawg is annoying to walk on a leash. However, he is a funny little friend that always makes me laugh. And you tend to forget about some of your problems when you are cleaning up dog poop on Kelly Drive and trying to pry a dead robin out of someone’s mouth. Yeah, no lie… some lady walked by and said “aw, you poor thing”… not sure if she was talking about me, or Murph (since I was cursing at him), or possibly the robin.

herding geese

KD

A little walk and some good music works wonders. A good run would have helped (damn you taper!) The nice day helped, crying helps. My counselor helped… friends helped. Rough days only make for better, good days. One day at a time, decompress and don’t stress. We’ll see, I am working on all this. The facts also are learning… don’t forget about your life and get too wrapped up into what you think you should be living, doing. Don’t get t0o busy or not care enough to live, because you are too comfortable in your routine. Only YOU can make YOU happy. And you never know what life is going to throw at you, so you better be prepared to deal with it, and get stronger in the process. Nothing lasts forever so you should be able to adapt and change. And never stop living… or meeting new people, or surviving on your own. Love one another unconditionally, but don’t forget about yourself either. :)

Most importantly, enjoy and love what you have when you have it and live and enjoy the moment. No regrets, take what’s handed to you and turn it into something amazing. “Omnia Causa Fiunt”. A friend just reminded me of this… I love the saying – Everthing happens for a reason and am always saying it!! Although sounds much better in Latin. – All things change and we change with them.

Taper Time

Dear Taper, I hate you already just thinking about you. I can’t sleep because you make me feel anxious and antsy. You make my heart beat a mile a minute and you stress me out. When will you be gone… yet when will I see you again? I feel like you are holding me back and making me unhappy. Are you really good for me in the end? Only time will tell… maybe someday I will learn to love you. Either way, I hope I do see more of you in the future because I know you have good intentions and only have my goals and needs in mind.

Workout Recap – 5.23.11

Love workout recaps… mostly because I only do them when I have a great run or PR. Today was a great run! Looked like it was going to pour any second so that definitely contributed to my quickness. But also no one was on Kelly Drive so I could really run fast and not have to dodge anyone or trip over dogs (usually mine). I also felt pretty good starting out, which is amazing considering I ate enough yesterday to feed half of Cambodia (sorry, Angelina!). :) Blasting good tunes in the morning also helps and gets you psyched up. Can I Kick It? Plus being super duper stressed and NEEDING to run all makes for a good one. Seeing 7′s always makes me happy.

Munchy Brunchy

girls

I’m not a huge fan of Sundays to begin with. Who knows why, it is still the weekend?? I think it started because of hating my old job and always having major anxiety starting off the work week. Harv and I always hung out togehter on Sunday’s though and made them lounge around, fun days! So lately they have been extra hard for me. I have to say though, my past few Sunday’s have been great. Sunday Brunch or hanging by the pool with great girlfriends… you can’t go wrong there!

This past Sunday was RedStone Grill in the Pramedane, NJ. Complimentaty mimosas anyone?… I’ll say yes to that! The food there is great! And I always like when they add little extras like bringing out warm towels at the end. So some more shopping spending all our money on dumb stuff like flasks. Not gonna lie I will definitely be using this… perhaps at the pool?

love it

So yesterday was another great Brunchy Sunday! One of my BFFs, Lori is visiting from the great state of Milwaukee (yes, I just had to Google that to see how to spell it). I never get to see her anymore and she is a blast!! So we did brunch yesterday, again at RedStone, in Plymouth Meeting this time. Why not try a new place? Let’s go over this again… FREE Mimosas! Well… this is what we thought and the main reason we went there. To our dissapointment, the RS in PA doesn’t give out complimentary Mimosas! What!? Oh well… we had to get wine instead. Great day with the girls though, I never thought I could have so much fun in Whole Foods, and also be so immature at 29 ;) . Yes, they do make all natural latex condoms apparently.?

No Pain No Gain

carbs

Blister, blisters and more… I guess I shouldn’t really be complaining because if this is my big problem at this point in training then I really have no problem. However, half of my blisters aren’t even from my sneaks, they are from a new pair of shoes that I got, and walked down to Main St in ONCE, last night!! My friend Steph came over for dinner and we had a great night, and super yummy meal at Bella. Wheat pasta with lump crab meat and shrimp in a light tomato garlic sauce, delish! Then we split pineapple cake, and of course there was some wine and drinks involved in all of this.

I felt a little sluggish this morning when I first started my run which I totally blame on the pineapple cake! But overall the run went well. What an amazing day for a run, and I am really loving Valley Forge and doing hills! Yes, that’s right… I said hills. Kelly Drive was just getting a little flat and boring. So minus the blisters (which actually weren’t even worth too much complaining), it was a good run. There are a ton of different loops that you can do around the park, so we did our two usual loops and then and out and back along a new trail, which always makes things for interesting. Crossing over a bridge and along the river was my fav, and gave me total motivation to keep going because you feel like you are on top of the world and really rockin it! I WILL bring my camera one of these days and actually stop for pictures… promise!

pain

quickie

Super quick post run breakfast this morning because I was in a rush to get to the pool. I stopped at Wawa for my ice and grabbed a breakfast sammie (which I shoveled in on the drive home), carrot juice and re-heated coffee (even though you can’t see it in there you’ll just have to believe me on that one). Coffee or someting warm is usually a must during ice-baths. Although I must say that I am actually starting to like them… no lie. Then off to the pool I went! I just joined this super ”posh” – hate that word but not sure how else to describe it, swim club. It’s adult (over 21 only), and today was the first day I was able to check it out. WOW, I am going to be loving this all summer. Great crowd, age group etc, awesome atmosphere… and how can you not like drink waitresses!? Four glasses of peach bellini’s later (GAIN!), perfect weather, pool, lounge chairs, having a blast with my friend, Damian (who is hilarious!)… heaven. PS- I definitely need a mani and pedi :)

So how do you gain without pain. I believe it’s impossible. No one can get where they truly want to be in life without somewhat of a struggle. Or at least without working their butt off… you can’t be expected to be handed anything. If you’re not willing to work at it and take some losses and sacrificies then you don’t deserve the reward. And maybe that sounds harsh but it’s true. Just like with running and training… you aren’t going to accomplish your goals without some punishment and good ‘ol pain. And you have to admit… sometimes the battle scars are worth it too ;) Who doesn’t love the tight quads and hammies when you know you worked for them. When you walk down the stairs and it hurts a little but you smile to yourself because you know you just rocked 16 miles worth of hills.

WORKOUT – 16 miles, hills

A Plus, Baby

Apparently my drinking and studying habits have paid off because I got an A in my Anatomy class… fist one down, 5 million more to go. Just kidding, not that many but it feels like it since I haven’t even gotten into a nursing school yet.

so big!

Motivation… it’s just the little boost that I needed to move forward and be able to say “YES, I can do this!”. Just like the 20 miler with marathon training. You need a little “taste” of your goal in order to reach it. And that extra kick gets you moving forward even faster and harder. And it’s an amazing feeling when you feel like you can take on the world and do anything. I’m sure my huge glass of iced coffee is contributing to my attitude just a little bit today though ;)

cushy socks

I’m also starting to get my things together for the marathon and getting super-duper psyched! I’m making sure I have all my gear ready and have used everything in training, as to not try any new socks, undies, shorts, etc. I KNOW these socks work great and I love them. So these will for sure be making the trip to SD with me in my carry-on. They are the perfect “cushy-ness” and soak up all your sweat just right. Plus they have the added “high heel tab” to keep them in place and make sure they don’t slid down and cause your shoes to rub (disastrous!). I never thought I’d be SO excited for something other than (my own wedding, or a vacation, etc). Who gets psyched about running 26.2 miles, and beating up their body and pushing themselves to the limit and testing their strength. Only distance runners I would assume? Most people think I am crazy when I tell them that I’m running a marathon, and I can only hope that within the next year I’ll actually be able to tell them “I am a Marathoner“! A+ to that.

Just Do the Damn Thing

I must say, I love Nike gear (minus their running shoes of course). And whoever invented their slogan is genius! However, I like my version a little better ;) … maybe they need to switch it up. Yesterday I did a little shopping, again (my blog should probably be called “shopping rocks” instead because I seem to do more of that lately).

JDTDT

Anyway, I desperately needed wanted a dri fit sweatshirt for after running. Does anyone else freeeeze after they are done running? Even if it is hot out, I get super cold once I stop and cool off – obviously from all my sweatiness. So I picked this little guy up yesterday at Dick’s Sporting Goods for $26! Love it! So soft and uber cool. A few good things to always have with you, or in your car is a nice comfy sweatshirt and flip flops. First thing I want to do when I finish up a run is take off my sneaks.

Today consisted of a slow easy (also annoying) run on Kelly Drive with Murph. Why was it annoying? Because he doesn’t know how to walk on a leash yet and runs in front of me, chews on his leash as he is running, and trys to herd me. He can’t help it, it’s only instinct but it does make it a little embarrassing and hard to run.

skinny minny

So to live your life by the Nike slogan would be great! And it’s true, how will you ever go anywhere in life or accomplish anything if you don’t “Just Do It”.

Workout Recap – 5.18.11

10 miler – amazing run. I felt great! Especially considering I drank 3 glasses of red wine last night, went to bed at 2:30am… woke up at 4:30 to eat a banana and some pretzels, blog and then went back to bed for another 3 hours. Not too shabby! Valley Forge is full of hills, which is great practice for SD. I started out feeling really good and strong and finished up kickin’ it. One reason, I was trying to beat the rain because it looked like it was about to pour. So I did a loop around part of the park which is about 5.6ish miles and then did an out and back.

10 miles – 1:24:54 – Avg 8.29min mile

Splits: 8:21, 8:13, 8:21, 8:15, 8:27, 8:57, 8:57, 9:07, 8:20, 7:56

Drinking and Studying

Not necessarily in that order… So how does one stay motivated with all of these distractions around? It’s amazing and wonderful to be on my own schedule, but can be hard at times to stay focused and on course with what I want to do versus what needs to be done. School work, training, taking care of the house, paperwork etc all” must dos”! Shopping, drinking, dilly dallying (my fav), laying out… all “wants”. I think I’ve been doing a pretty decent task lately at getting a lot done and working needs and wants into my schedule. Last week for example was amazing- weather wise, so I layed out for an hour a day while I got some reading/studying done. Murph was being a pest and climbing all over me so I even had to throw him the ball from time to time. Wow, talk about multi-tasking! :)

fun fuel

study-up

The other night I made a delicious quick sangria too. Not sure how this ties into my “getting shiznit done”, but wine helps you relax at the end of your long day and cherries are good for your joints after running, so combine the two and you’ve got a great dessert! Frozen cherry-berrys and some boxed red vino, you are good to go! And eating the alchy soaked cherries at the end is the best part because at that point you are a little buzzed and they taste even better ;) And yesterday I went to this great Coffee Cafe in Manayunk to study. They support local farmers and use only fair trade organic coffee. So look at all the good deeds you are getting done at one time!? So I guess my question would be is it possible to have and do it all?? I think it is! Just a matter of “pacing” yourself. A little trick that you can do in life and in running. Self control is a big one too, which is something I need to work on lately. When you are out having a blast, it is hard to cut it off sometimes. And studying… we’ll see how that goes when I get my grades back ;)

Twenty Big Ones

So the final big training run today went amazing!! I felt great from the start, ran well and finished strong. I think all of my drinking training has really paid off. I can honestly say that I was really proud myself today.

pre race fuel

It all started with my “pre-race” day prep. Food and shopping! A girl’s perfect day. Tons of water, great food, a good night sleep and a little retail therapy is what I cann a great pre-run day. Gotta treat yourself, right ;) The night before I made a delicious din of pasta, chicken and broccoli, had one 80z glass of red wine and a Godiva dark chocolate rasberry truffle. Oh and I snuck an Ativan in for good sleeping measures ;)

The day I had yesterday was also amazing. A little retail therapy does the soul good! Not the wallet though. KOP gets me every time. Lots of good shops, and lots of good deals marketing ploys that get you to think you are spending less money then you really are. So I stopped off at MAC, Arden B, VS, Bebe, Aldo and JCP – oops! ;) Got some good steals though and didn’t end up spending too much mula. Isn’t it the best when you get to the register and they tell you your purchases are less then you thought!? Also, a good new coral lipstick is a must for a fresh feel.

Ok so enough of the prep day, let’s get into the actual mileage. I promise I’ll start briging my camera with me more so that I can get some actual pictures of actually RUNNING! So after a wonderful night’s sleep, I woke up excited and ready to go for the day. I said “let’s DO the damn thing!!” Ate my oatmeal, drank my Emergen-C, downed half a 32ozer of water, went to the bathroom, etc etc. Did all my other necessary pre run prep (full post on this later). Listened to some good tunes and took some pics and I was out the door!

Do it DO it!

The run itself was great! Perfect weather for me. It was a little overcast, running in the woods on some back trails next to the creek so it was a little cooler. I was able to keep my long sleeve shirt on the whole time, which helps with the fuel belt situation and keeping my stupid big ass Garmin on my wrist. Anyway… the Team all started out at a decent pace, prob around 10 min mile pace. Running with people always helps the mile go by quicker too, because we are all gabbing and talking about running life and getting excited for SD. Team in Training sets up water stops for us along the way so we stop at these, causally chat for a bit, use restrooms etc and then head back out, or on. I stop my watch at this point so that I can get a true idea of time. Lap 7-13 the pace got a little slower… and then picked up again at 14, I was running more by myself so I kept it under 10 – booking it a little at the end around 9-9:30. Now Garm says I ran 20 miles, however it is also telling me that I did 21 laps… which would be 21 miles. So there’s a little descrepincy there but we will just stick to the 20 for now. An extra mile or two never hurt though ;) Finishing up the run was amazing!! I even added in a huge hill at the end, and getting a cheer and congrats from TNTers is awesome!!

Post race fuel up… beer and a grilled chicken sammy with lettuce, tomatoe, onions, prov cheese and french fries, YUM!! PS- beer has to be the best, most refreshing thing after a run (besides maybe a Margarita?) It’s a toss up. Finally got home early afternoon-ish and it was ice bath time, of course!! All in all my legs and whole body feels really good. A few pings and pangs here and there, but I think that is only natural for the amount of mileage. The training, both physically and emotionaly that I gained from this run is going to allow me to kick 26.2′s butt!

WORKOUT- 20 baby!! 3:20mins

Recovery (not from running) Shake

So how is the eating and “non drinking” going? Well… OK I guess. The eating is going pretty good (had a few little slip-ups), but so far so good and everyday is a new day and learning experience. Always improving!! One step at a time.

smooooooothie

Now for the drinking aspect. I did say I would allow 2-3 drinks, in moderation. Well… that changed a little bit yesterday. This damn nice weather gets me every time! Main St was calling my name and I met up with one of my new girlfriends (who is aweome, btw). She is going back to school and completely changing her life as well so we have a lot in common. Anyway, sitting outside having a late lunch and a few delicious drinks got the best of me! One drink, two glasses of wine, and a shot over my limit :( Oh well… I will know for next time right? No one’s perfect… not even me ;)

Let’s talk about this “recovery” shake! It is great for a hangover or after running. This little guy is going to be curing my alcohol induced feelings this morn. 1. One packet of vanilla carnation breakfast (apparently there is as much protein in these as an egg!) – that’s what the box says and you know how I love my marketing ploys 2. One cup of milk 3. One banana 4. One Tablespoon of flaxseed 5. Half an avocado. Mix it up, yum. So delish and creamy. Then drink tons and tons of water and you should be good to go! Also, a SBs always helps.

WORKOUT – probably none (JK!) – weights and yoga, prep for tomorrow’s 20 miler!

You know you’re a distance runner when…

distance runners are weird

1. You can’t sleep the night before a long run because you are too excited

2. You can’t sleep before any run because you are too excited

3. Rest days are never as enjoyable of a day

4. You have a hard time staying under 6 miles, during training/weekday runs

5. You rather walk then do a 5k race

6. You start to get your groove on and really feel good at mile 6

7. You blow through your entire I-pod shuffle way too many times (yes, I need an I-pod)

8. You can always do ONE more mile

9. It’s not a distance run unless it’s over 13.1

10. You actually like ice-baths

WORKOUT – 13.1, including hills

Marathon Weight Loss and Goals

So there’s a lot of hype out there about running and running weight loss! Please note, folks… I DO NOT run to lose weight. Stay in shape, yes I guess that would be one of the pluses. But I run because I LOVE IT and am OBSESSED, got it? :) Now, granted this is my first marathon coming up in June… in San Diego. So I am not the expert on this. But from what I’ve heard from other marathoners (I consider someone a marathoner if they consistently run them). Anyway – most of whom I’ve talked to have said they drop weight right before the marathon. This I think happens naturally and is also a good idea.

1. you can always run better when you feel lighter 2. you should be watching what you are eating and drinking anyway 3. why not get ripped up and actually look like you are running one. Here are some of my goals for the next month (one month til SD).

ready to run!

Drink – tons and tons and tons of water! (trying for a gallon a day, that is about 208 ozs). Eating super healthy, lots of protein and good carbs, lots of veggies and NO junk food or extra sugary crap. Portions, portions, portions! Everything is moderation and proportioned out (yes, I know that is obsessive). NO drinking, and by that I mean no more then a glass or two of wine/beer, etc. monitored and measured of course. Also… nothing else that may cause your appetite to become ravenous ;) Keeping at my current/marathon goal weight is important (email me if you are interested in the exact number, I prefer not to post it). Making sure I get lots of sleep is also really important, however has been something that I’ve been struggling with for the last year. So we’ll see how that goes without wine ;) So those are next month’s, health goals.

Training wise – finish out the season with no injuries, feeling good and feeling like I can kick this little 26.2 in the ass! I will say FU to 26.2 when I cross that finish line. :) I hope. Left yet for long runs I have a 13-er, a 16-baby, a 20-hells yeah, and an 8-uh oh taper time… that’s it for the long runs. And then it’s weekday recovery runs and the usual 5-6 milers.

WORKOUT- full yoga dvd today, weights

Hottie Run-a-lottie

Picking up Runner’s World the other day… I never thought I’d fall in love!! Hugh Feist… wow, he is super hot! Here is what the write-up in RW June 2011 Issue says.

“With his pro soccer career behind him, HUGH FEIST, 24, gets his kicks these days by running. Feist, who logs about 20 miles per week is planning to make his marathon debut this year. A native to Germany, Feist lives in Miami Beach, where he typically runs along the shorelines sans shoes. ‘I like to feel the cold sand on my feet’, he says ‘and do some intense running on a soft surface.’”

mwah!

Here is what my write up says… “With his pro soccer career behind him, HUGH ‘hottie’ FEIST, 24 (ok, so he is a little young for me), gets his kicks from hanging out with his awesome girl, April these days… and by running with her (even though she is way faster). Feist is planning to make his marathon debut this year at Boston, with his cool GF… who also qualified. Feist currently lives in Miami Beach, where he runs along the shorelines sans shoes and shirt, and sometimes shorts – but only when yours truly is visiting – like every weekend.”

What do you think, isn’t mine way better and so much more true!! Seriously though I already googled him and he has a model GF, sorry Ladies! (and me).

WORKOUT – 5 miles (why is it so hard not to run more!?), yoga
