Miles to Date

Looking back at my Daily Mile tracker. I was curious to see how many miles I ran so far this year. I usually keep track of how many I have on my sneakers, and my Enigma’s – that it seems like I just bought are closing in on their retirement soon. And it seemed a little quick. They have about 240 – ish (ok so I’m a little crazy and I know the exact number 255.1). Should be paying attention to more important numerical things in my life like how much money is in my bank account… but seriously, priorities. Anyway the Daily M tracks me at 465 miles since January which is pretty cool since we are closing in on Christmas in July soon and the halfway point through the year. Too bad none of my New Year’s resolutions happened yet – workin on it!

This being said…. do I set a mileage per year goal? Say 1,000 ? I’m almost at 500 and we are half way there so it would make sense. Hhhm. Do I really need another psycho running goal? Um – yes. Who knows, we’ll see but I’ll keep an eye on it and watch the progress from here on out.

So that being said. Enter.

I’m always wary about new sneaks because sometimes my feet need to adjust. Even if I get the same exact pair/style, you just need to let them settle in I guess. So the WaveRider’s will be coming with me on some of my shorter runs in the next few weeks.

Dear Mizuno’s

Dear Mizuno’s,

You came into my life at just the right time. I can NOT wait to spend time with you and get to know you better. I’m looking forward to our next few months together. All the miles that we’ll share. The good times… the happiness that you will bring me. Our relationship will build with each step we take together. Here’s to you, brand new Mizuno’s and an amazing training season.

Love,

Your new BFF

Shot Bloks

These guys are starting to replace my love for Sharkies. 200 cals for two servings, which is one pack. Just the right amount of chewy-ness. Mostly all organic and natural. Packed with electrolytes and cals in each cube so you can track how much you are taking in. You can pop one at a time or eat the whole thing before a run (like I do of course). And what’s the best part… some even have caffeine!

I Like Surfers … screen

So I was bragging about how I didn’t need any of my running products today. Such as sunscreen, bodyglide etc etc. Well…. I definitely got burnt!! Damn you January sun and your sneakyness. I guess I should have known, being out there for two hours in the sun with pale winter skin I’d have that coming to me. I got back and noticed all my freckles were out – cute. After shower, sunburnt – not cute. Oh well, lesson learned. From now on… winter, summer, spring or fall I’m making sure I put on my surfscreen! Love this stuff for running because it’s hardcore, stays on and doesn’t run in your eyes or feel sticky and gross at all. You can definitely be in some intense sun and not get torched. I’ve also talked to several other runners who’ve said they use the same stuff. Some of those surfers must know what they are talking about…

Besides how funny is this video HIC Girls ??

Obsessions for the Fall

This post is a little late in the month, usually I do it early and yes it’s crappy because I don’t have a good picture. Notice there haven’t really been a lot of those lately!? Wow, I am slacking. Here’s the best I could do… playing with my new Jake’s old Iphone and all the cool camera settings.

Lush

lush

Not what you’d think coming from this one (pointing at myself). Although I have been called that yesterday in the past. Walking around today on my way back from work (yes, I do that once in a while), I came across Lush. I’ve driven by a few times before and have been intrigued but never had the opportunity to go in. I think I fell in love – yet again. Bright colors, amazing smells, friendly people, huge bold writing, colorful and creative packages, fun slogans, green products, sparkles… and much more. Seriously whoever does the marketing for this place is a genius. Maybe they work for Nike also.

There were about a million new fun things to try. Everything looks like you could eat it (and some of it you can!). Which only adds to the appeal. I think my favorite were the bath and shower “bombs”. Throw them in your tub during a bath and or shower and its instant iromatherapy and fun! I’m not a huge fan of showers, I think it’s kinda like a chore (seriously, how did I ever get anyone to marry me, I’ll never know). Anyway so anything that makes it more fun, bring it on! Most of these little guys have creative and not so G-rated names and slogans that go along with them adding to their lushness.

bombs

You also get to try anything you want and they’ll show you how it works. You’d be surprised how hard it is to add water to stuff sometimes. Plus if you’re a dude you might like the fact that they rub stuff on you – and not in a creepy way like the people at the mall. Check it OUT. comparable to Bath and Body Works it’s like going on a hot date to Capital Grille vs the drive thru at McDonald’s by yourself at 2am.

edible!

Perfect place for gifts or presents to yourself. Much safer buying a bathbomb or lotion then a new handbag when you need a little retail therapy. I left with a few things – not all for me! And felt smooth, sparkly and happy on my way out. And also still had money left in my wallet. Can’t go wrong there.

my favs

I got – lip scrub that tastes like mint julips… rub it on, and lick it off (told you, not always appropriate for children). Made with real sugar and tastes delicious! Tinted lip balm that is the exact perfect color and a cool name. A silky smooth powder which is a major upscale version of grandmas’ talcum powder. And a bunch of stuff for a certain someone’s 30th B-day tomorrow!!!

lush times call for lush measures

WORKOUT – foam roller (not exactly a workout), yoga, weights, stretches AND signed up for a gym membership (yes, this counts)

Famous Dave’s

FDs

Time for some more fun products! And I can not say enough good things about this stuff!! People kept asking me how I got so tan… 1.training for the marathon and running outside  2.pool membership and not working all summer  3.FAMOUS DAVES (and I don’t mean the BBQ joint).

This stuff is freaking awesome! I usually hate most tanning products because they go on streaky or they smell or look orange-y. But this stuff is da-bomb… so good, you might as well have some BBQ along with it.

They also have different ‘shades’ – for fair skin or tan skin. In the winter I use the fair skin one. Obviously since I look like this girl in the winter… complete with red eyes and all.

Naked

yeah yeah

Bet that got your attention! Everyone has been raving about this coconut water crap. So what is it really? Well – Coconut Water. It’s supposedly loaded with electrolytes and potassium and all that good stuff. Which it is! And it’s great for running and for hang-overs, two of my favorite things. I try to stick with all natural stuff with not a lot of extra flavor and sugar. I’m pretty happy with this and will definitely be drinking it after long runs long nights partying. 🙂

Pack it up, Pack it in

race day stuff

Let me begin. Ok, not sure what it is with the old school rap lately in my head. But it is fun and motivating! I neeeeed motivation to pack. I think I finally got all my race gear together. Which looks like it is gonig to take up half my suitcase. Most importantly sneaks – CHECK! Which I will be carrying with me for sure, along with my actual race attire. TNT singlet so that I can fit into the sea of purple people that will be running, Fav socks and undies, shorts and throw-a-way. Race food – oatmeal, Stingers, Emergen-C, Nuun (for after), salt packs, and Sharkies (just because I love them). Prep is of course Body Glide, HIC Surfer Sunblock spf 50 (because I love surfers),  Anti Monkey Butt (for my feet, not by butt – well maybe?- I think I use this as more of a ritual then it actually does anything), Burts Bees lip balm and althetic tape (just in case). Then there’s hair ties, markers and fun stuff. The necessities – Garmin (who needs a name still??), earbuds, sunglasses, fitness belt (to carry all my crap – might as well be a fanny pack!). And post race bag for flip- flops (must!), fresh sunglasses and tissues (for all the crying I will be doing when I finally cross the finish line). It sounds like a lot and looks like it could also give me trouble zippering my suitcase but I “think – eek!” that is it!

Love all my runnning products by the way. Most of them I discovered from Danica who I am psyched I may actually get to meet this weekend! 🙂

too much stuff

Ready to hit the road!! Whatever I forgot I can always buy at the expo (at a higher price and with RnR logo on it). Which if you don’t know me already, there’d be a good guess I’ll be doing a little purchasing there anyway. 🙂 Tomorrow morning will be coffee plus old school rap plus getting up at the butt crack of dawn for the flight – let’s do the damn thing!!

WORKOUT – yoga, taper pool

Sunday Runday

What a RUNday it was!! 16 miles, baby…. I think the most consecutive miles that I’ve probably done ever. I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous. Especially because my ankle has really been bothering me. I had a stress fracture back in July and I worry that it will come back. The day started off with all my goodies, getting ready at 6:30am (yes, this is late for my “new lifestyle”… I used to get up at 5:30). So anyway… let’s talk about the prep and all the fun stuff.

Lil running helpers

First things first… the electronics – Garmin and Shuffle. My big I-pod is got left out in the rain out of service right now. I really just started running with music not that long ago. Running is really my time to think and reflect, and -don’t hate me on this one- but I always looked at using music as a weakness. Well, who said that?? Because I love running with music! I do think it makes it a little bit more fun and there’s nothing better then hearing a great song when you are really rockin’  it and feeling good. Still, really really enjoy running without music and I can honestly say it really enhances the natural and mental aspects of running. Now the Garmin is NOT a necessity and sometimes becomes an annoying and obsessive habit. But… I use it anyway and it is a helpful tool. Real time: 6:56, not 7:56am.

Second, but probably (actually, is) more important is the fuel. I have never been a before run eater but with long miles coming up it is definitely a must! I usually eat a pack of organic oatmeal – prepared just with water. Also most of the time before the run I will drink Emergen-C Joint Health which has Glucosamine, Vit C and Chondroitin in it. All which give you “Power for Joints” – these have not yet been evaluated by the FDA, etc etc – but this is what the marketing says so I believe it 😉 Another plus about this is that you can drink it warm and it is good for cold days to warm up your body and get you ready to go out there and freeze your little running butt off! Now… mid run I’ll down a few Honey Stingers and you know my love for them! Then there’s the lasts but certainly not the leasts. The Fitness belt to carry all your crap. AND Harvey’s Leukemia bracelet for good luck and motivation! Plus a rubber band and some safety pins for some ghetto-ness. 🙂

Not too much to say about the run except it was AMAZING!! Sixteen, enough said (sorry, I know that is the worst running blog description ever). I am more into talking about the extras today though. So, after the run comes the dreaded (insert scary music here) icebath!

frozen piggies

Well call me weird or crazy or cool but I really kinda dig the icebath. Mostly because I know how much it is helping and how it is going to cure some of the pain. But if you have a nice little setup going and try some of these tricks you might end up liking them too. When I remember, I fill up the tub with water before I leave, cold I guess is better but either way by the time you get home it will be room temperature anyway. Then I stop at Wawa on my way home (or other said convenience store) and grab a bag of ice… usually a 7lber or so. Now, one of the tricks is to get into the tub first and then slowly start to pour the ice in. Make sure the water is at least covering the top of your legs and up to your waist-ish. I always wear a sweatshirt which never gets wet you can hang up to dry after you accidentally drop it in. This helps keep you semi-warm and cozy! A winter hat helps too 🙂 no lie. Then I make sure I have my coffee or something else hot to drink. And I put some tunes on! Stay in for about 3-4 songs and you are good to go! Put some (dry) sweats on and wait about a half hour to an hour before you get a regular shower.

While you are waiting you can pigout fuel up! Eating what you crave is the best thing to do. I usually crave eggs, pretzels and some kind of fruit. Sunday I didn’t have too much time so I grabbed a Chobani pineapple yogurt, Uncle Jerry’s hand made pretz’s and a banana for the road!

post run munchies!

And yes, you are right… that left me no time for a “regular shower” 😉

WORKOUT – 16 miles!! and lots of stretching

Sting or Bee Stung

If you’ve ever tried GUs and absolutely hate them…. then you will love these little guys, Honey Stingers! Finally a gel that you can consume while running that doesn’t want to make you puke. Who wants to swallow warm “GU-ey” liquid that doesn’t taste good… ah, hem… that is saved for times other than running 😉

Anyway… these are amazing! They are “All Natural Energy” and taste just like honey! The Gold is my favorite, Honey with B Vitamins. Then there is Chocolate Honey with Cocoa and B Vitamins – both are fat-free and have 120 Calories and 29 grams of Carbs. The other flavor is Ginsting Honey – which has Ginseng, Kola Nut and B Vitamins, this one contains caffeine – LOVE!

Beeee Stung!

On long runs, fueling up is a must (for me, anyway)… everyone is different. BUT, after about an hour and a half of running, I usually start to feel a little faint. I stay away from any type of Gatorade or Powerade while I run and strictly do water… mostly because my stomach is better off. So getting in some quick cals (and caffeine never hurts!!), during a long run really pays off and gives me that boost of energy that I need to finish.

What is your fav power booster while running? Beans, blocks, GU(ews), strictly Gatorade… caffeine? Nothing? (because you are so awesome you don’t even need it)
